Visible Image | ATC Swaps Tutorial

Hi there! Thanks for visiting our blog today! Jane is here today to tell you all about the Visible Image ATC Swaps, and for those of you who are new to making Artist Trading Cards Jane has all the details you need…

Hello, it’s time for my latest design team make for Visible Image! Last month I started up an “official” Visible Image Artist trading card (ATC) swap over in the Facebook group. I pair up participants who create an ATC using the theme given, and then post to each other. It was a great success and everyone voted to continue it as a regular event. If you like trading ATCs I highly recommend you come over to the Facebook group! and join us! So far 53 Visible Image fans worldwide have taken part. Some of the Design Team (including myself) also take part.

Above is a selection of the ATCs I have made in the past and below is the swap I made for the first “just be you” swap.

I thought today it might be useful for people who have either never heard of ATCs, or don’t know where to start, to show from start to finish my way of making an ATC. This post might also be useful for future reference. Please bear in mind that this is how I personally approach my ATC making, and there are many different ways of doing so.

The theme for the current swap is “here comes summer”. The swap on Facebook is for one ATC but I always chose to make 4 as I keep one, I send one to my 7 year old crafting granddaughter and I swap one elsewhere.

The first thing I did was to choose which stamp sets I wanted to use for the theme. I decided to work with the Summer Wings butterflies

summer wings stamp set | butterfly stamps | dragonfly | line drawings

and to add some background interest to my ATCs I also chose to use the gorgeous grunge circles stamp from the Butterfly Effect set.

big butterfly stamp | grunge circles | bubbles | stamps | clear | rubber

To make my background I used one of my shaving foam distress re-inker marbled backgrounds. I wanted something really light with lots of white space. There are lots of videos on line if you are not familiar with this really old technique. I first made these with food colouring when I was at primary school! This one was made using Squeezed Lemonade, Salvaged Patina and Kitsch Flamingo re-inkers.

I then cut four 3.5 by 2.5 inch backgrounds from the sheet.

All ATCs need to be this “standard” size.

Many people including me, display them in trading card pockets and if they are not this size they won’t fit.

I stamped the word ‘summer’ from the Summer Wings set using Versafine ink and clear embossed to give a shiny appearance and to add some texture.

ATCs can be created in portrait or landscape form so I decided to make 2 of each. I always like add some background detail so I stamped the grungy circles from the  Butterfly Effect set using the new Salvaged Patina distress ink. I love this new colour and yes you can stamp regular distress inks using Visible Image stamps. Their quality is such that the ink does not bead.  Regular distress ink give a lovely subtle vintage effect which you can see above. If you stamped in an oxide you would get a much more intense effect but that was not was I was looking for.

Next I got out my bag of inky scraps and chose some pieces which co ordinated with the backgrounds.

I stamped out lots of the 3 sizes of butterflies and cut them out.  They are so useful for adding to any project that it’s always a time saver to have some ready to go. I cut off the antennae as I would be re stamping the whole butterfly again on the ATC.

To me what makes an interesting ATC is lots of little details. I often use my sewing machine to sew around the edges but you can also use a “faux” sewing effect with a sewing marking wheel. Just use it against a ruler. I use the metal edge of my ruler.

It leaves holes behind like those from a sewing machine.

You can then use a pen to go over the line and it looks like stitching. Try to not be too neat as it looks much more realistic! I used a gold pen this time but black and silver also looks good.

I added some ink to the edges.

I then played with placement of the butterflies. When designing odd numbers always look better than even, and 3 of something is very pleasing to the eye.

I used 2 large and 1 small for my 3 butterflies. Once I was satisfied with the placement of  the butterflies on each card I stamped them in Versafine ink.

I then adhered the butterflies on top.

To give the cards a good thickness of around 300gsm I back mine with the inside of a Weetabix packet. This is really good quality kraft card and free! Just cut it slightly smaller than the ATC and adhere together.

For finishing details I added a Wink of Stella clear glitter pen to parts of the wings and some of the small circles, and then Glossy Accents on top for real sparkle!

The final touch was to add some co ordinating sequins.

So here are the 4 all together as a group..

I hope this tutorial has been useful. If you have never made an ATC do have a go! They are such fun and a great challenge to design in a small scale. You don’t need tiny stamps either…these 5 below were made using the new large A5 Dragonfly Reflection set… I just used parts of the dragonfly with the words.

Butterfly Canvas | Rainbow Distress Inks

Hi there! We are back with more fabulous new stamps inspiration today! Jane has made an incredible butterfly canvas with the gorgeous butterflies, grunge elements and sentiment stamps from our BUTTERFLY EFFECT set with a wonderful dripped rainbow of inks…

Hello, I am super excited today as I reveal my first make with one of the brand new A5 stamp sets!

For my first sample I used the gorgeous ‘Butterfly Effect’ set.

large butterfly stamp | grunge circles | bubbles | change sentiments

To showcase it I made a canvas and, as I could not decide which colours to use, I went for them all….a rainbow of butterflies!

This is what I got up to;

I took my distress spray stains and sprayed across an A4 sheet of watercolour paper, adding water and allowing plenty of drippage.

I then stamped around the edges with the “collage” element stamps which are really gorgeous in this set. There is a butterfly flourish (seen in the final photos) and these lovely circles.

I stamped the large butterfly, coloured it with zig markers and cut it out minus the antenna.

I stamped out 9 small butterflies and cut them out in the same way. I coloured them in a shades of 1 or 2 colours.

I also stamped the sentiments and matted them on black card, adding my signature glossy accents to the circles/bubbles. Finally I adhered it to mount board. It is A4 size and destined for my little granddaughter who adores all things butterflies and spotted this!

Here it is;

This set will be going onto my all time favourite stamps set list (yes I know this list constantly grows  but this really is a real stunner of a set).

Daisy Stencil | Butterfly Stamps

Hello and Happy Friday to you! Sorry our blog has been a little neglected for a few days, it’s been such a busy week! We have also been doing live demos over on our Facebook PAGE most evenings so check them out if you haven’t already! Our wonderful Design Team have been really enjoying creating lots of projects with our NEW stencils, and Jane Tyrrell is here on the blog today with a gorgeous summer canvas featuring our ‘Daisy Daisy’ stencil with our new ‘Summer Wings’ stamps, a perfect combination…

Sharing the same name as my Granddaughter Daisy, I just had to use this stencil for my first make with the new release.

daisy stencil | frameless | visible image

How gorgeous is that!

I wanted to create something very light and summery so I got out my distress sprays and had a play on watercolour card.

I love that you can use the spray ink left behind to print with too (these are the images on the white
card)

I decided to use stamps from the Summer Wings set to make a very summery canvas.

butterfly stamp | dragonfly | summer | reflect

I stamped lots on inky mop up card and then added some more inks as needed.

I also stamped and cut the words into “banners”

I used this stenciled image.

I stamped my butterflies in place

and then decoupaged the wings adding glossy accents to their centres, and to the the centre of the daisy stencil.

Here is the finished canvas..

and one last shot..

This is such a pretty stencil and would work in so many different colourways and with so many different stamps. A real “must have” for any crafter.

The new stencil release is available to pre-order now! There are 8 more stencils in the release, do check out social media and the Facebook page where there are lots of samples being shared.

Mixed Media Wall Art | Butterfly Stamps

Hi there, we are sneaking in with an extra post today! We just had to share this stunning art work by Lynda Hall featuring our fabulous new butterfly stamps and sentiments on an incredible textured background…

For my latest Visible Image inspiration I am sharing a piece of wall art that I have created, featuring the new release Summer Wings stamp set. I love the clean lines of the butterflies, they offer endless opportunities for creativity.

I started this piece with a piece of watercolour card, that I sprayed with water before applying watercolour paint. I wanted lots of lovely texture on this, so I used the salt technique.

This is a simple process where you sprinkle rock salt over the painted card when still wet, and allow it to dry naturally. It absorbs the moisture and leaves the most interesting patterns and texture.

When fully dry, I brushed off the salt and sealed with a layer of matt medium.

Then for more texture! I coloured crackle paste with acrylic paint and applied it liberally with a pallet knife.

While that was drying and doing its magical crackly thing, I finished off my butterflies. The day before I had stamped and gone over the outline with Pebeo Cerne Relief. This enabled me to fill the gaps with Pebeo Prisme paint, which once dry contains beautiful patterns. This does take a while to dry fully. I left mine overnight before fussy cutting out.

With the crackle paste dry, I then really went to town on adding more texture. I added Izink Ice, acrylic ink, embossing powder, texture sand and beads. I also added some stamping detail using stamps from the Shape It Up set (this is SUCH a useful set to have in the stash for backgrounds!)

To finish I mounted on black, and added the sentiment stamps and adhered the butterflies.

<

When framed it makes a beautiful unique piece of art work.

I had the camera running while creating this tag…

Fluttering Butterflies

Hi there! Thanks for coming to check out today’s inspiration here on the blog. Jane Tyrrell is here with her latest project…

Good Evening all,

I hope you had a lovely weekend? We enjoyed a family BBQ at my daughter’s, it was so good to all get together with both sides of the family. It was the 10th year they have hosted it..how the years fly by.

I am here with my weekly post for Visible Image, and some new inspiration.
The bees have been humming around and I have seen lots of butterflies but they seem to vanish whenever I try to grab my camera!

However one found it’s way into my kitchen…or perhaps this might be a pretty moth?

My card today was inspired by these amazing insects and the sunny colours in my garden, and uses (in my opinion) the best butterfly stamps on the market.  Visible Image have sold these gorgeous butterflies for some years.

I also used the brilliant time swirl as I had the idea to have the tiny butterflies emerging from the end of it.

These were the stamp sets I worked with:

I created a distress oxide background

..I love the effects you can get with the Oxides…a real splash of colour here

I stamped the time swirl. I also stamped and embossed some butterflies on some inky mop up card and fussy cut them out.

I added the butterfly shadow and stamped the small butterfly silhouettes emerging from the time swirl. The sentiment is from the Unicorn set. I stuck the fussy cut butterflies over the shadows which gives such a cool 3D effect.

We hope to see lots of you joining in with this month’s “a splash of colour” challenge over in the Visible Image Facebook group. You could be the random winner of a £40 coupon to spend in the shop!

Thanks so much for stopping by today and for the kind comments you take the time to leave me. Keep cool and carry on crafting.

Back soon!
Bye for now,
Jane x
