Counting Butterflies

Hello! Hope you are having a lovely weekend. We have 3 inspiring projects to share here on the blog today, we’re kicking off with a brilliant card by Sharon Traynor featuring our gorgeous inky butterfly stencil…

Hi! Today I’m adding a little sparkle into your lives with an inky little number that uses a couple of gorgeous Visible Image stencils and a stamp, plus loads of twinkly embossing powder and sprinkling of glamour dust. (Scroll down for a photo that really captures the sparkle).

One thing I love to do with stencils it to layer them on top of each other to create a bit of added interest and additional pattern. This wonderful butterfly stencil is perfect for that technique because it has a large open area.

inky butterfly stencil - numbers stencil - visible image

Here’s how I made this card:

Wet a piece of watercolour paper, then using the Tim Holtz Distress Marker Spritzer, spritz distress markers to make the background and dry with a heat tool. Attach the ‘Butterfly Ink’ stencil and blend through the stencil with mustard seed distress ink. Attach the ‘Count Me In’ stencil over the top and blend through both stencils with spiced marmalade.

Remove all the stencils. Drawing freehand, draw around the outside edge of the butterfly with a white opaque pen and then use a black pen outside the white line. Draw around the outside of the numbers in the butterfly with candied apple, then add detail glue inside the numbers and sprinkle with glamour dust. (I’d forgotten that I still had glamour dust until I was rooting through my stash the other day!)

Add a few ‘veins’ to the background by painting them in with a paintbrush using tarnished brass distress stain.

Ink a small piece of card with the same colours as the background, stamp and heat emboss the sentiment before fussy cutting it out.

Create 2 sparkly mats for the sentiment and the main image by inking the outside edges with versamark clear ink and then heat embossing with a sparkly black embossing powder.

Into The Bluebell Woods

Hello! We have some gorgeous inspiration coming your way today. Jane Tyrrell is up first with a fabulous art journal page…

A couple of weekends ago my Hb and I went for a walk in our local woods. I promised I would be back to share the bluebells that we saw. This annual spectacle is something I wait for and never miss. It is just magical.

Whilst we were there we took a moment to sit on a log and gazed up into the tree canopy above us through to the blue sky and sunshine.

When I got home I decided that I needed to make a “Moment” for Jane’s Journal to remember that time.

I knew that the fabulous Into the Woods stamps set from the brand new Visible Image release

would be perfect so I decided to make my weekly DT piece for today using it together with the beautiful new Butterfly Ink stencil

I started with a piece of watercolour card the same size as my journal and added some drips of Salty Ocean, antique linen and cracked pistachio distress oxides to start off my background. I then used a corner of the Stop Meshing Around stencil

as the sun using yellow Distress inks

I added some more “sunlight” using the Take My Hand stencil…the hand of Mother Nature perhaps?

As you can see English bluebells are not blue at all but more a shade of mauve.

so I added this colour through my Butterfly Ink stencil

I added 5 butterflies around the page using Wilted violet distress oxide and then added some more depth using the circle stamp from the Hummingbird set

Once I was happy with my tree canopy it was time to stamp the woods….first the under canopy in purple, to represent the drift of bluebells.

Then the top line in green, to show those brand newly unfurled leaves. I took the stamping around the sides of the page as I wanted to give the impression that we were sitting down and gazing up from the floor of the bluebell wood.

So here we are…….let me set the scene again……”It is a glorious blue sky morning. The sun shone out like a ball of lemon fire.

It was the kind of day that makes you glad to be outside, hand in hand with Mother Nature.

 Into the woods we went

to be greeted by the splendor and scent of bluebells, their drifts were everywhere, like a carpet of purple.

We sat down for a moment to pause and looked up through the canopy of the newly leaved trees to the clear blue sky above…a Moment in time to remember. “

Below is my Moment in it’s entirety. I think the words I chose to use from the set summed up how we feel about our life. It was a blissful Moment there, among the bluebells.

art journal page - bluebell woods - Visible Image

There are 6 new stamp sets and 8 new stencils…all totally amazing and uniquely Visible Image.

I’d also like to give a quick heads up too. Myself and 2 of my VI Design Team colleagues have a stamping feature in this month’s (June edition) of Making Cards Magazine. We all used the Seahorse and Dare to swim Visible Image stamp sets to make 3 very different red, white and blue cards

and here is a teeny weenie sneak peek of my underwater card……do check it out!

Thanks so much for taking a walk in the bluebell woods with me. I have so many ideas for using this amazing new stamp set….

I hope you all had a fab weekend, wasn’t the royal wedding a total delight and Windsor looked stunning in the sunshine too.

Back soon.

Bye for now,
Jane x

Embrace Your Quirky Self

Good Morning and Happy Friday! Hope you have some great plans for the weekend! The sun is shining and we have some amazing inspiration coming your way here on the blog today! First up is Heather Mitchell who has got her hands on our NEW ‘Butterfly Ink’ stencil and wow just wait until you see the result! We love the quote Heather has chosen too… do you ‘Embrace Your Quirky Self’ ?! Over to Heather…

Hello everyone and thank you for joining me here today!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock of late, you will have seen that Visible Image has released six new stamps and eight new stencils.  They have absolutely done it again and produced the most fabulous images and sentiments that I know everyone is going to love/want/need!

As someone who loves to add texture to their makes, I have a huge love of stencils.  I absolutely love all of them if I’m honest as they’re all so versatile and you can pick certain elements out of all of them to use in different ways but the Butterfly Ink stencil really caught my eye.

Visible Image - inky butterfly stencil - Heather Mitchell

I wanted to use the stencil is a really simple way to show how fabulous it is and so I made a card using just the stencil, a sentiment and some crackle paint.  All Visible Images stencil’s are fabulous quality, so lovely and thick so that they holds mediums really well and they’re pretty tough (my stencils go through a bit of a bashing and have all survived!)

Having secured the stencil to some watercolour card, I’ve applied crackle paint quite thickly in places as I wanted a some lovely thick cracks.  Once dried (air drying is best) I’ve dripped different coloured inks along the cracks that the ink spreads.

Visible Image - Butterfly Ink Stencil - cracked texture paste

I love the subtle colour that the ink gives

Around the edge of the butterfly, I’ve used a watercolour pencil to give a watery outline and I’ve also given him a coat of matt varnish to protect the crackle and stop it flaking off over time.

Visible Image stamps - embrace your quirky self quote

Visible Image’s sentiment stamps are always so perfect!

The sentiment is from the new Voices In Your Head set, and comes with four sentiments that you can easily mix up and use the words to form your own sentiments. I have been known to cut sentiment stamps into individual words (if they aren’t already) as I like to mix things up a bit and this makes it easier.

Having trimmed the image down, I’ve inked the edged using a matching ink pad and then matted it onto black card.  The sentiment has then been stamped over a watery inky background and secured to the bottom of the card using foam tape.

The new stamps and stencils are going to be flying out of Visible Image HQ and if you need any encouragement, head on over to the blog homepage where you’ll find plenty of inspiration from the other DT members.  Here’s what I used for this make:

Thanks for looking, see you all soon!

Inspiring Sentiment Stamps

Hi there! Veerle Moreels is up next on the blog today, with a beautiful tag featuring our NEW ‘Butterfly Ink’ stencil and one of the inspiring sentiment stamps from our NEW ‘Stronger Than You Think’ set…

Sometimes I start thinking and looking at the world around us. And to many times I notice all the demands we need to fulfill. It all needs to go faster, it needs to be better.  And strangely enough we feel the need we have to meet up with them. We can’t stay behind, we have to meet to the high standards others set for us. And without knowing we let them take away beautiful parts of us, parts that make us US.

With this in mind I had a play with one of the beautiful new released words and stencils. Very easy, and CAS but I had the camera running anyway.

Don’t let anyone take away your color. Smile your beautiful smile…

Incredible Butterfly Stencil

Good Morning! It’s a very exciting day here at Visible Image as we release our awesome NEW stamps and stencils!!! Our Design Team are loving creating with them and we have lots of amazing samples to share with you over the coming weeks. Heather Mitchell has got her hands on ‘Butterfly Ink’ our stunning inky butterfly stencil, and added in the ‘incredible’ stamp from our ‘Voices in Your Head’ set and the result is just WOW…

Hello everyone…

A very impromptu post today as I’ve had some lovely comments over in the Visible Image Facebook group about this little make…

inky butterfly stencil - Visible Image stamps

I was only playing when I made it, but sometimes that’s when you get the best results.

So some of you were asking for a tutorial and (obviously) I can’t go back and re-make (and I haven’t got the time to make another one) so I thought I’d talk you through the process, is that ok?

The stencil I’ve used is one of the gorgeous new releases from Visible Image and is called Butterfly Ink.. an inky butterfly stencil.  It’s one of eight new stencils and all are amazing!

Anyway… to start, I taped the stencil (please use low-tack tape or it’ll ruin everything!) to textured card.  I’ve then drawn around the butterfly using Derwent Inktense pencils.  I did the Tan colour first using a fine paintbrush to add water and dilute the lines.

Be careful when adding water that you don’t add too much as it will seep under the stencil, so less is more.  I then added the Bark colour in the same way…

Don’t forget to add colour to the elements around the butterfly

Use the colour around the edges to then colour the butterfly itself.  I teased the colour out of the edges as this gave enough colour for me but you can add as much or as little colour as you like.  To make the Frayed Burlap colour slightly more intense, I’ve given it a very light spritz, as this really makes the colour come alive.

Once dry, take a Wink of Stella brush and added subtle sparkle around the outline

I’ve used Frayed Burlap Distress Oxide ink pad on the ‘incredible’ sentiment as I love the chalky finish you get.  I didn’t use a stamping platform or an acrylic block, I literally stuck the stamp to my fingers and freehanded the stamping so I could control where I wanted the lettering to start/end.

Once dry, I added more shimmer using the Wink of Stella on some of the letters. To finish, I’ve matted it onto black card and then onto a beautiful copper pearlescent card before securing it to a 7×7″ card blank.

And there you go!  A really easy card to make and even if you fluff up the outline (like I did in places) it doesn’t matter as you can use a brush to erase any mistakes!  I’d love to see any cards you create using this technique so do tag me any!

Own Kind of Beautiful

Hi there! We are back with some gorgeous inspiration from Heather today…

Hello, Hello Everyone…

I’m back again sharing not just one but three makes I made for the Visible Image Design Team!

I had a Gelli plate for my birthday last year but I’ve not really spent much time playing with it. After seeing some gorgeous makes on Facebook, I felt inspired to dig it out and see what I could come up with.  Have you ever Gelli-plated?!  Just gather your acrylics in your chosen colours and a multitude of mark making tools.  In the past I’ve used bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard and anything I can get my hands on but for this make I used elements of the following stamp sets:

Own Kind of Beautiful

Ink Splats

Live in the Moment

Elemental

Scripted Streets

Mesh-ellaneous

The first ‘pull’ has the majority of the colour and images

The 2nd print, or ghost print, is fainter and has much more white space

Once the prints have dried, you can select areas to use for making your cards.  The first print, I cut an area 8×8″ and matted it onto black card stock.

After heat embossing the three butterfly silhouettes in black, I added a hint of sparkle using Ink Splats to add areas of silver and to highlight the main sentiment, which I embossed over the coffee stain stamp.

To add extra dimension to the project, I heat embossed the butterfly detail in copper onto Vellum, which is such a lovey, soft paper to use.  Once fussy cut, I adhered them to their silhouette with their wings slightly aloft.

I love the contrast between the background and the softness of the Butterflies

I almost prefer the ‘ghost’ print as I’m not good at putting white space into my makes.

Fabulous textures on the ‘ghost’ print

I love the delicate wings on the dragon fly from the Live in the Moment set and his wings look incredible over the background splatter from Somewhere in Time.

The second card also used the background splatter from Somewhere in Time,
but this time has the fabulous eye from Where Dreams Take You.

The silver embossed circles are from the Live in the Moment stamp set

I’m rather chuffed with these makes and I definitely want to explore what my Gelli Plate can do as the textures and layers you can create are very much my style.  Why not hop on over to the Blog homepage to see what everyone on the DT has been making lately!

That’s all from me… have a great week and I’ll see you soon.

How Fragile We Are

Good Evening, we are back with a second dose of inspiration here on the blog today.

Lisa Taggart is here with an absolutely stunning project…

Hi,  I’m mixing a little of the old with the new this week. Today’s project is essentially made like a shaker card in the sense that it has two layers- card and acetate sandwiched between ‘shaker’ foam.

I liked the idea of creating a background scene- a land of butterflies behind glass… and where the butterflies escape through the cracks.

This is the new featured stamp set: How Fragile

and the other sets used:

Live Life Now

Own Kind of Beautiful

To begin using watercolour card and Spectrum Noir Sparkle pens I created a background

3F930EED-4512-4460-8A48-472754F09C6D

Using the butterflies from the ‘live life now’ set I heat embossed them on top using dark blue glitter embossing powder.

BD01E602-B577-43C3-BE32-7BFF07C4CE0D

Taking an A4 sheet of heat resistant acetate I also stamped and heat embossed the cracks in black  I coloured the centres and extended and highlighted the cracks using a posca white pen.

6CCC8F0C-B003-4539-B3F8-958213BA9546

On a separate sheet of acetate the butterflies from the ‘your own kind of beautiful’ set where also heat embossed in black, coloured and on the reverse painted in white to make the colour stand out.

0A5E4B85-1CBA-4548-9039-2C0B3837AD7D

After the butterflies were cut out the background was edged using shaker tape. A couple of the butterflies were adhered to the background.

0E0EF522-3A74-49C7-AAA2-456F95C84977

The top acetate panel was stuck on top and the rest of the butterflies placed, some half out and the rest free. A black frame was cut and placed on top along with the sentiment which had been embossed in white onto black card and cut out.

Hope you like the idea.

Till next time..

Mother’s Day

Good Evening! We are back with more gorgeous inspiration from Jane Tyrrell…

It’s another marvelous Monday and time for my weekly dose of Visible Image inspiration.

The next “event” in my card making is Mother’s day, which falls here in the UK on Sunday 11 March.  I needed to make some cards for selling at Dotty’s tea house and decided to use the top line of the brilliant “Mother” definition stamp in my designs.

(Next week I will be sharing another card where I have used the whole of this stamp…watch this space)

I also wanted to use some specific words from the Written in the Stars collection. I used words from the Aries, Cancer and Pisces set but you could easily chose any… I think it is lovely to be able to be so personal.

I stamped and embossed them in white on black card and then fussy cut them out.

The warmer weather made me also reach for my more summery stamps and 2 sets which I have not used for a while. The original butterfly was a very early Visible Image stamp I bought many years ago and is now part of this fab set.

I also used my Fibres stencil

I made my design in 2 colourways and it is interesting to see how different they look.

I used red and blue distress inks for this colour way with some stenciling using purple.

and for a “hot version” I used yellows and oranges. This was my background mid way..

I then added some red distress through the fibres stencil to really spice it up.

Here is my “sunny” version which I also added a few sequins to…

They look so different don’t they?

Here are a few close ups..

You can mix and match the extra words..

and a last shot of them side by side..

It will be interesting to see which colourway sells first in Dotty’s!

Next week I will share some more Mothers’ day card ideas using a different set of Visible Image stamps.

Thanks so much for stopping by today and for the kind comments you take the time to leave me. Despite my sunny cards it looks as though the weather is returning to winter this week… brrr it has been so cold and there may even some snow in the south of England. Keep snug wherever you are.

Back soon.

Bye for now,
Jane x

Imperfect Butterfly

Good Evening and Happy Friday to  you!

Wow what a busy and very exciting week we have had… Mark has been creating some incredible new stamps for release early in 2018! Cannot wait to show you!!!

Meantime, Pauline Butcher is here with some gorgeous inspiration for you today…

Hello there,

Here I am again with another ‘Visible Image’ Fabulous Friday project.

This one is very easy to achieve, and I’ve used this technique at some of my recent Inky Workshops.

It would work with quite a few of the fantastic Visible Image silhouette stamps, but I chose to use the beautiful butterfly out of the Live Life Now set:

and the sentiment is from the Imperfection is Beauty set:

The card stock I used is Watercolour card, and I heat embossed the large butterflies using Wow Bright White embossing powder.  I then sprinkled some Brushos onto the card and spritzed with water, adding more colour and more water to get the effect I wanted, I then left this to dry naturally.

Once dry, I added the smaller butterflies using a Distress Ink, then stamped and heat embossed the sentiment using Ebony embossing powder from Wow.

Thanks for visiting,
Hugs
Pauline xxxxx

Fluttering Butterflies

Hi there! Thanks for coming to check out today’s inspiration here on the blog. Jane Tyrrell is here with her latest project…

Good Evening all,

I hope you had a lovely weekend? We enjoyed a family BBQ at my daughter’s, it was so good to all get together with both sides of the family. It was the 10th year they have hosted it..how the years fly by.

I am here with my weekly post for Visible Image, and some new inspiration.
The bees have been humming around and I have seen lots of butterflies but they seem to vanish whenever I try to grab my camera!

However one found it’s way into my kitchen…or perhaps this might be a pretty moth?

My card today was inspired by these amazing insects and the sunny colours in my garden, and uses (in my opinion) the best butterfly stamps on the market.  Visible Image have sold these gorgeous butterflies for some years.

I also used the brilliant time swirl as I had the idea to have the tiny butterflies emerging from the end of it.

These were the stamp sets I worked with:

I created a distress oxide background

..I love the effects you can get with the Oxides…a real splash of colour here

I stamped the time swirl. I also stamped and embossed some butterflies on some inky mop up card and fussy cut them out.

I added the butterfly shadow and stamped the small butterfly silhouettes emerging from the time swirl. The sentiment is from the Unicorn set. I stuck the fussy cut butterflies over the shadows which gives such a cool 3D effect.

We hope to see lots of you joining in with this month’s “a splash of colour” challenge over in the Visible Image Facebook group. You could be the random winner of a £40 coupon to spend in the shop!

Thanks so much for stopping by today and for the kind comments you take the time to leave me. Keep cool and carry on crafting.

Back soon!
