Fearless Tiger Stamp | Pencil Colouring

Tyger, Tyger, burning bright…
….in the forests of the night.
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
That poem, ‘The Tyger’ by William Blake, is seared into my memory, having studied his ‘Songs of Innocence and Experience’ for my English Literature exams, oh so many, many moons ago! And it rattles around in my brain every time I see a tiger image. Those romantic poets have a lot to answer for because I have a similar relationship with William Wordsworth when I see images of clouds and daffodils (I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud), and John Keats when I see autumnal images (Ode to Autumn).
Anyway, back to tigers…
I had such a great time taking this beautiful Visible Image fearless tiger stamp, and trying some no-line pencil colouring. He is such a majestic image, isn’t he? And he works so well on an inky background for a quick card, but I think the no-line colouring lets you emphasize his soft, ‘furriness’ and his whiskers.
Here’s a brief run through of how I coloured him, and I apologise for the quality of some of these pictures; I seem to have picked up a bit of glare on them.
First, stamp the image in a feint colour of ink on your chosen card/paper. I used black on black because I always intended to over-stamp and clear heat emboss in the last step to give some additional texture. If you want to do the same, be sure to keep your stamp in the same position in your stamp positioner until you have finished colouring.
I wanted to start colouring around the eye area, so I added a little bit of white fur by making some small ‘flicky’ lines around the eye, then adding a white spot in the eye and using both yellow and green on the eye itself.
Once I was happy with the eyes, I added pink to the tip of his nose, and started colouring with yellows and oranges on the nose area. This area needs to be pretty smooth compared to the rest of the face, so go very gently here and gradually build up the colour.
Next I coloured the rest of the face with the ‘flick’ method. If you look closely you will see that as well as the oranges and yellows I’ve added pink into the fur to tie in the nose, and there is a little bit of light brown too. On some of the white parts you will also see a tiny bit of blue as well as grey.
Carry on building up the colours slowly and gently until you are happy with the result.
Then add him back into your stamp positioner and re-stamp in a clear embossing ink, then heat emboss with a clear powder. I think you can just about pick up the shine and texture of the embossing in this picture, especially in the bottom left.
To finish off, mat him onto white card, and then onto more black card. Stamp the sentiment and add that too.
